Strawberries

Britain’s favourite berry is now in the peak of its season. Beautifully vivid in colour, sweet and fragrant, strawberries are a real summer treat; rich in vitamin C, folate and phytonutrients they are also a treat for your body. Nutritional Profile Strawberries are a rich source of vitamin C, containing about twice an adult’s daily requirement in a good serving (about 8-10 strawberries). Strawberries also contain significant amounts of manganese, folate, vitamin B-6, potassium and fibre. Strawberries are bright red in colour due to anthocyanins, compounds (phytonutrients) that have powerful antioxidant activity, helping to prevent oxygen from damaging body cells. Oxidative damage is the process underlying cardiovascular disease and aging. The phytonutrients in strawberries also have some anti-inflammatory activity, modulating the activity of cyclo-oxygenase (COX), an enzyme which releases pro-inflammatory hormones from omega-6 fatty acid stores in the body. Fruits especially rich in phytonutrients are associated with a decreased risk of developing cancer and strawberries specifically have been linked to a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. How to Enjoy Strawberries are very versatile. Make the most of the season by serving them simply, on their own with cream or high quality ice cream. They are also delicious with plain yoghurt for an every day summer dessert. Fresh strawberries are a refreshing addition to a breakfast bowl of muesli. Try them dipped into melted dark chocolate for a heavenly fondue. Join the Wimbledon crowds this summer - the champagne is optional!
