A Look At Hypnobirthing / Tranquil Birth Method

A look at Natural Birth
I qualified with the Institute of Hypnobirthing in 2005 and was
registered with them until a few months ago when I made a decision
to put together a package of my own and so Tranquil Birth Method
evolved.
Having worked with many couples throughout this time and had many
successes with the hypnobirthing philosophy, I personally felt
that there was more that could be offered to the mother to support
her throughout her pregnancy and the first months of motherhood,
physically , mentally and emotionally. By using other therapies
it is possible
to work at many different levels :-
- the first level allows you to work with your body, using different
therapies to detoxify and get your body into optimum level ready
for the birth, looking at diet, exercise etc., and again after
the birth to stay fit and healthy;
- the second level looking at the mental attitude towards the
birth and motherhood, learning techniques that will help you
with the
birth, involving your partner (who so often feels left out ) to
help with the birth, giving you the mental strength and confidence
to take control of the birthing process and feel relaxed to make
it a natural birth;
- and finally the third level which works on the emotions;
learning to bond with your baby in the womb and again after the
birth;
giving you the confidence to enjoy motherhood. Here therapies such
as baby massage can be learned to bring about this family bonding.
Hypnosis has been used for decades in childbirth. In fact, before
I qualified in hypnobirthing, I used hypnosis several times with
pregnant moms to keep them confident and relaxed throughout pregnancy
and the birth.

The philosophy of hypnobirthing explained. Hypnobirthing is fairly new in the UK and is a philosophy rather
than a technique. Its concept is not new but rather a “rebirth” of
the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago
and it was recaptured in the work of Dr Grantley Dick-Read, an
English obstetrician, who first forwarded the concept of natural
birthing in the 1920s. It is a process of calming, educational
and relaxing techniques that eliminate the use of fears associated
with labour. As well as promoting the special bond between a baby
and its parents, it cannot only shorten the first stage of labour
but in many cases can also eliminate the need for chemical painkillers.
So hypnobirthing/natural birthing/tranquil birth or whatever you
wish to call it can offer several advantages :-
- a natural, virtually painfree birth
- a calm, peaceful birthing environment
- a safer birthing for mother and baby
- good natured babies who are better sleepers and eaters
- a shorter, more comfortable labour
- elimination of fear and tension before, during and after
the birth
- reduction of fatigue
- a quicker recovery

Tranquil Birth Method
The Tranquil Birth Method builds on visualisation and hypnosis
to keep you relaxed and in control throughout your pregnancy, birthing
and motherhood. This allows you to let go of any fears and tensions
and by keeping the body in this deep relaxation at all times, severe
pain does not have to be an accompaniment to labour. We know that
the body’s natural anaesthesia (endorphins) replaces the
stress hormones that constrict and cause the pain. There are no
side effects. Clients remain in control at all times, and
we are just reverting to birth in its natural form.
 What does it entail?
One of my reasons for looking at a new way to deliver natural
birthing was because of today’s rat race, all too often it
was difficult for the father to attend classes and one-to-one sessions
became more convenient. This often proved expensive for many couples,
who liked the concept but who were thinking of additional costs
involved with a new baby/etc etc. I also felt that there was a
need to tailor the programme to the individual couple and their
lifestyle and expectations rather than offer an off-the-shelf package.
Linking all the therapies/treatments that I can offer means that
I can start working with the mother early on in the pregnancy,
preparing her body for the birth, allowing her to
choose what she needs for that particular treatment.
A treatment plan will be set up, allowing a regular appointment
time and the various options discussed.
Therapies that can be used :
- Reiki : to help relaxation and reduce stress levels
- Reflexology : to balance the body, to rid body of toxins
and to alleviate any stress
- Pregnancy Massage : to get rid of general aches and pains
- EFT : a self help technique to help throughout pregnancy,
labour, motherhood to get rid of any fears, negative
feelings etc
- Hypnosis : to allow the mother to relax at any time,
to get rid of any negative fears, feelings etc
- Spinal Touch : to help with postural problems
- Exercise : gentle exercises that can be done to help
stay fit
A convenient date will be arranged to work on a one-to-one basis
with both parents so that “dad” can learn to take control
of the birth, allowing “mom” to just lie back and relax
through it all. This session is usually carried out in the couple’s
own home, if possible, as this allows for better relaxation and
allows couples to ask questions without any embarrassment; how
often have you attended classes where you’re not quite sure
of something but think you will look ‘daft’ if you
ask a question - so you stay quiet? Often everyone else probably
wants to ask the same question!
This session will be tailored to suit your requirements but can
include such things as :
- All you need to know to achieve a safe, comfortable birth
- Techniques to eliminate fears, tension and pain
- To understand the body’s own natural epidural
- Natural ways to bring you body into labour without chemical
induction
- How you and your birthing partner can create a wonderful,
calm birthing environment
- Gentle techniques to allow you to gently bring the baby into
the world without all that physical pushing
- To create the birth of your baby that mirrors the way that
nature intended
- To create an atmosphere that includes three important people
: mom, dad and baby…. all working together on this special
day
If at the end of this session, mom and dad feel they need a further
session, or need to revise some of the techniques, additional sessions
can be set up on an hourly basis at my practice.

After the Birth
Sessions can continue with the new Mom, using some or all of the
therapies, to maintain health and fitness, to get rid of any fears/negative
feelings, to boost confidence, to learn baby massage etc. From
experience I know that after those first few weeks, when everyone
has gone back to work, when baby starts to teethe, often the new
mom’s confidence often slips and some TLC is required for
her! So why not be pampered for an hour or take an hour on the
beach with some hypnosis !
These sessions will be tailored to the individual needs. For example,
sometimes both parents want to learn baby massage to increase the
bonding with their baby. Mom (or dad) just needs an hour’s
pampering to help relaxation.
